WHAT IS MOVEMBER?

Held in the month formally known as November, Movember is about changing the face of men’s health.  Starting Movember with a clean shaven face, the Mo Bro’s, spend the month growing and grooming their mo as well as raising funds and awareness about men’s health – specifically male depression and prostate cancer.

WHAT IS THE PERSONNEL GROUP MOVEMBER CHALLENGE?

Through its many services, The Personnel Group supports people with mental health issues to remain in the workplace.  The Personnel Group Challenge is a call to arms for local businesses to register and pit themselves against other local businesses to raise awareness and money for men’s health issues, including male depression.

SOME FACTS FROM BEYOND BLUE

  • One in six Australian men is affected by depression at any given time.
  • Four times more young men than young women commit suicide (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2000).
  • The experience of male depression is complicated by the fact that men are more likely than women to shy away from medical treatment of any kind. Instead of discussing psychological problems, or seeking appropriate treatment, men may turn to alcohol and drugs when they are depressed or anxious.
  • The statistics for teenage boys and young men are a concern. In the past 30 years, the suicide rate for males aged 15 to 25yrs tripled.

SOME FACTS FROM THE PROSTATE CANCER FOUNDATION OF AUSTRALIA

  • Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer that afflicts Australian men and the second highest cause of cancer deaths in men.  Each year in Australia, close to 3000 men die of prostate cancer – equal to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually.  Around 18,700 new cases are diagnosed in Australia every year.
  • One in 9 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.
  • Prostate cancer occurs when the cells of the prostate begin to grow uncontrollably.  When caught and treated early, prostate cancer has a cure rate of over 90%.
  • Simple testing by a GP can indicate prostate cancer.
